Broken internal links
One dead destination can be referenced from many pages, templates, schema nodes, canonicals, or hreflang declarations. The repair unit is not always the URL that returned 404.
What this finding means
A broken internal reference points from a captured source to a destination that remains unsuccessful after the configured verification. The source and destination must stay separate: a dead URL can be intentional while a reference to it is still the defect.
Evidence to preserve
- Source URL and target URL
- Discovery layer and matched literal
- Initial status, final status, final URL, and redirect hops
- Every distinct source-target pair and likely shared root cause
How to repair the cause
- Remove or update the reference in the source content
- Repair the shared template or structured-data field when the same literal repeats
- Restore the destination only when it should genuinely exist
- Keep intentional dead destinations out of live navigation and machine-readable references
How to verify the fix
Re-fetch and re-parse the recorded source pages. Checking only that the old target is still 404 cannot prove the reference remains.
A crawl can prove the delivered reference and response path. It cannot decide whether an editorial destination is semantically equivalent to a replacement URL.
